The result is a veritable handbook of the fan scenes of the former Yugoslavia. Exactly 251 groups from almost 190 cities are examined. These include not only the big players like Hajduk, Red Star, Dinamo Zagreb, and Partizan, but also delve deep into the depths of various leagues. From the sun-drenched Adriatic islands in the west to the fertile Danube valleys in the east. From towns with a vibrant Ottoman flair in the south to the snow-capped Alpine peaks in the north, the curves and alleys of the cities are connected by a common Balkan element – their navijači – the fans from the former Yugoslavia. Despite their cultural differences, these fans have developed a unified and distinctive style in the stands thanks to the years they spent together in one country. In this book, we also discuss the typical problems within the scenes, internal divisions, the financial support of leaders by club boards and politicians, the peculiarities of derby rivalries, and ethnic conflicts.
You'll also read about the tourist attractions of the cities and discover fascinating facts about their history, as this often provides the background for many of the elements that determine the development of the respective fan groups and help us understand them. The individual football clubs will also be presented – their beginnings, their sporting successes, and their stadiums. In short, you hold a unique travel guide in your hands, from the most famous cities to the lowest leagues of the former multi-ethnic state. For all fans, groundhoppers, and tourists who are passionate about football and fan scenes, this book will hopefully be a useful companion on their travels through the Balkans.
