Fred Perry is one of the best-known British fashion brands and combines sports history, music and subculture like few other labels. The brand was founded in 1952 by British tennis player Fred Perry. What began as functional tennis clothing developed over the decades into an established part of British streetwear and subculture.
The heart of the brand is still the Fred Perry polo shirt with the embroidered laurel wreath on the chest. The M12 in particular, with its characteristic twin tipping on the collar and cuffs, evolved from a sportswear piece into a subcultural uniform as early as the 1950s. Mods, ska, punk and indie scenes repeatedly embraced Fred Perry and interpreted the brand in their own way. This connection between classic British style and the streets continues to define Fred Perry today.
Fred Perry is about much more than the iconic polo shirt. The range also includes T-shirts, sweatshirts, knitwear, shirts, jackets and accessories. The laurel wreath remains the central identifying feature - usually placed discreetly and instantly recognisable precisely for that reason.
Classic materials and meticulous workmanship are at the heart of Fred Perry. The best-known example is the cotton piqué polo shirt. The current M3600, for example, is made from 100% cotton and combines the typical piqué fabric with twin tipping on the collar and cuffs, as well as the embroidered laurel wreath on the chest.
The Made-in-England collection holds a special position. Models such as the M3, M12 and M2 are made in Leicester. There, the cotton piqué is knitted, dyed and cut before the shirts are embroidered and finished by hand. Fred Perry still partly relies on traditional machinery and manufacturing techniques.
Important: Not every Fred Perry polo shirt is produced in England. While the M3, M12 and M2, among others, are part of the Made-in-England line, models such as the M3600 have been produced in China for several years.
Fred Perry has traditionally stood for a clean, relatively close-fitting silhouette, although the fit varies depending on the model.
The M3600 is a more modern interpretation of the classic Fred Perry shirt and has a slimmer silhouette than the original M12. The M12, on the other hand, is based on the classic fit of the original M3.
For the M3600, we generally recommend your usual size if you want the typical Fred Perry look. If you are between sizes or prefer to wear your polo shirts a little more loosely, you can try one size up.
For the classic Made-in-England models, it is worth taking a close look at the individual model and sizing information, as some are listed not in S–XXL but, for example, as 36, 38, 40, 42, 44 and 46.
A classic Fred Perry T-shirt or simple logo T-shirt is the easiest way to get started with the brand. The laurel wreath creates the typical Fred Perry look without making the outfit feel overly branded.
The Fred Perry M3600 Twin Tipped Shirt is one of the brand's best-known models. Cotton piqué, twin tipping and the embroidered laurel wreath create exactly the look Fred Perry has represented for decades.
If you want to stay as close as possible to the brand's history, take a look at the M12. The original Twin Tipped Fred Perry shirt is made in England and combines the classic fit with the characteristic 5:4:4 twin tipping.
Fred Perry works particularly well when the outfit remains simple. A classic polo shirt with dark jeans and clean sneakers is probably the easiest combination and has worked for decades.
For a more distinctly British look, combine a Fred Perry polo with a Harrington jacket, straight-leg trousers and simple leather shoes or sneakers. For a sportier look, wear a Fred Perry T-shirt or sweatshirt with jeans or clean track pants.
With Fred Perry in particular, less is usually more. The laurel wreath and characteristic tipping details are distinctive enough for the rest of the look to remain understated and monochrome.
For us, Fred Perry is one of the brands that fits The Smart Dresser perfectly. British tradition meets streetwear, music and subculture here - without the pieces needing to follow short-lived trends.
