When Ben Sherman returned from America in 1963 to care for his ill mother in Brighton, he had no idea what an enormous influence he would have on the entire fashion world. Having gained some experience in the textile industry overseas, he soon went into business for himself and began producing his own shirts. His style was unmistakable: Oxford cloth in pale shades of blue, rose, and yellow, paired with the unmistakable button at the back of the collar. This unique stylistic direction, which the founder adopted, quickly captivated British subcultures: from the Mods, to 2-tone and Ska, to modern-day Brit Pop. The Ben Sherman shirt and brand have been adopted by every youth culture and style movement of the past five decades. Equally inextricably linked to the brand is the adapted cockade of the Royal Air Force, which can be found in various variations on the products – e.g., the Target Tee.
